Raggedy Ann Special Edition Patent Doll 2002

This boxed doll is approximately 18" tall and made by Applause, LLC exclusively for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.

The front and back of the box feature the original design patent for the Raggedy Ann doll.

Front: Johnny Gruelle's 1915 patent sketches depict a happy little hayseed with tousled hair, button eyes, and a fashion sense that is hers alone. Renowned doll artist Janie Jones has now created a Raggedy Ann doll with all the warmth and charm of Johnny Gruelle's original design.

Inside flap (text by Andrew Tabbat):

On September 7th, 1915 Johnny Gruelle was granted a patent for a funny new doll named Raggedy Ann. Gruelle's design sketches depict a happy hayseed with tousled hair, button eyes, and a fashion sense that is hers alone. A poofy pinafore protects the skirt of her clean old frock as she goes about her business. Her broad-brimmed bonnet may have seen better days, but Raggedy Ann has refreshed it with new ribbons. Snazzy striped stockings peek from beneath her lace trimmed pantaloons. Her feet, pointing east and west, are shod in Mary Jane slippers that might be called dainty ... if only they weren't so enormous! This country cousin may be rather gawky, but who could resist that infectious grin, or those extended arms that seem to invite a hug?

By 1918, when the P.F. Volland Company marketed Raggedy Ann, she had begun to look more like the doll we know and love today. The teardrop nose seen on the patent has become a triangle. She lost her floppy hat, and her style of dress was more down to earth. What has never changed is a simple appeal of a soft doll with a plain, honest face and a loving heart.

Renowned doll artist Janie Jones has now created a Raggedy Ann doll with all the warmth and charm of Johnny Gruelle's original patent design. This is a very special limited edition doll exclusively from Applause, LLC.
